Spróbowałem włączyć instalator, ale po rozpakowaniu plików wyskoczył komunikat "You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com". Wyłączyłem xserver poleceniem sudo service lightdm stop
i ponownie włączyłem instalator. Komunikat zniknął. Zaakceptowałem licencję, po czym wyskoczył kolejny komunikat, by wyłączyć kernel nouveau.

-> nvidia-installer will install the libvdpau and libvdpau_trace libraries that were included with this installer package. These libraries are available separately through the libvdpau project and will be removed from the NVIDIA Linux driver installer package in the future, so it is recommended that VDPAU users install libvdpau separately, e.g. by using packages available from their distributions, or by building from the sources available at:

Spokojnie, proszę już się tak nie denerwować. Jedni mają szersze pojęcie na te tematy, a inni prawie w ogóle. Nie sądzę, aby wyrzucenie tematu do kosza w czymkolwiek tutaj pomogło.
Edit:
Spróbowałem jeszcze w pytaniu "Would you like to register the kernel module sources with DKMS? This will allow DKMS to automatically build a new module, if you install a different kernel later." odpowiedzieć nie, dzięki czemu sterownik zainstalował się poprawnie.
